7 Phone Settings Worth Turning On Today

Your phone came loaded with settings nobody explained to you. Most people never open that menu again after setup day. A few small changes can fix the battery drain, the spam calls, and the notifications that won't stop buzzing.

None of these take more than a minute. You don't need to be good with technology. You just need to know where to tap.

1. Turn On Optimized Battery Charging

On most iPhones, go to Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging, and turn on Optimized Battery Charging. It slows down charging overnight so the battery doesn't sit at 100 percent for hours, which is what wears batteries out fastest.

On most Android phones, look under Settings, then Battery, then Battery Protection or Charging Optimization, since the exact wording varies by brand. Samsung calls it Protect Battery, and Pixel phones call it Adaptive Charging.

Tip: A battery kept between 20 and 80 percent most of the time lasts years longer than one that's always full or empty.

2. Silence Calls From Numbers You Don't Know

On most iPhones, go to Settings, then Phone, and turn on Silence Unknown Callers. Numbers not in your contacts go straight to voicemail instead of ringing.

On most Android phones, Google's Phone app has a Call Screen feature that answers suspicious calls with an assistant and shows you a live transcript before you decide to pick up. Look for it in the Phone app's settings under Spam and Call Screen.

3. Turn Off Ad Tracking

On most iPhones, go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Tracking, and turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. This stops apps from following what you do in other apps to build an ad profile on you.

On most Android phones, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Ads, and turn on Delete Advertising ID or Opt Out of Ads Personalization, depending on your phone's version.

4. Set Auto-Lock to Something Short

A long auto-lock time drains battery and gives anyone who picks up your phone more of a window to look through it. On most iPhones, go to Settings, then Display & Brightness, then Auto-Lock, and choose 30 seconds or 1 minute.

On most Android phones, it's under Settings, then Display, then Screen Timeout. Thirty seconds is enough for almost anything you'd do quickly.

5. Turn Off Notifications for Apps You Don't Need Updates From

Go through Settings, then Notifications, and turn off alerts for games, shopping apps, and anything that isn't a message from a real person. This is the single biggest fix for a phone that buzzes all day.

Tip: Keep notifications on for messages and calls, and turn off almost everything else. You can always check an app when you open it.

6. Back Up Your Photos Automatically

On most iPhones, go to Settings, tap your name at the top, then iCloud, then Photos, and turn on Sync This iPhone. On most Android phones, open the Google Photos app, tap your profile picture, then Photos Settings, then Backup, and make sure it's turned on.

This one matters more than it feels like it does. If your phone is ever lost, dropped in water, or stolen, your photos stay safe.

7. Turn On Find My Phone

On most iPhones, go to Settings, tap your name, then Find My, and turn on Find My iPhone. On most Android phones, go to Settings, then Security, then Find My Device, and make sure it's turned on.

If your phone goes missing, you can see its location, lock it, or wipe it from another device before anyone gets into your information.

Tip: Turning this on also helps if you simply misplace your phone somewhere in the house. Playing a sound from another device saves you from checking every couch cushion.

A Few More Worth a Look

Once you've gone through the main seven, two more small changes are worth the extra minute. On most iPhones, Settings, then Sounds & Haptics, lets you lower how loud and how often your phone chimes for things that don't need your full attention.

On most Android phones, Settings, then Sound & Vibration, then Do Not Disturb, lets you set quiet hours automatically, so your phone stops buzzing once you're in bed without you having to remember to switch it off. Many people set this up once and never think about it again.

Why These Settings Get Overlooked

Phones ship with settings tuned to get you using the phone as much as possible, not necessarily in the way that suits you best. Notifications default to on, tracking defaults to allowed, and auto-lock times default to longer than most people need.

None of that is an accident. It just means the setup that works best for you usually isn't the one the phone arrives with, and it's worth a few minutes to change it once.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to overhaul your whole phone to get real improvements. A handful of small taps, spread across settings menus you probably haven't opened in years, fix most of the daily annoyances people just live with.

Set aside five minutes today. Go through this list in order, and you'll feel the difference by tomorrow.
